Elsie and Eileen

Elsie (formerly named Gracie) and Eileen (formerly named Frankie) went home last week with Kate and her mom, Leeann. Both heroes are from a colony of dogs with Batten Disease – a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system that affects dogs and young children. Children suffering from Batten disease become blind, bedridden and demented; they typically die in their late teens or early twenties. Eileen is a carrier of the disease, but both dogs are unaffected. Their research family is studying gene and enzyme therapies for affected dogs, and an enzyme therapy to treat affected children is currently in clinical trials. They are ADORABLE, little heroes and we are grateful to Kate and Leeann for giving them both a fun and loving home!
