Here’s a Napoleon we think is dynamite. Don’t you agree? Melissa and her family sure do! They adopted their hero from our program and from the looks of things, they are absolutely adoring him.
Why is Napoleon a hero? He is an unaffected carrier in the study for Batten disease, a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system that affects dogs and young children. Children suffering from Batten disease become blind, bedridden, and demented; they typically die in their late teens or early twenties. Napoleon’s canine family and researchers are studying gene and enzyme therapies for affected dogs, and an enzyme therapy to treat affected children is currently in clinical trials.
